Space Suits EP
Space Suits EP is the first project to come out of my own studio. It's a compilation of songs that I have written recently. I'd like to claim that the songs show growth and maturity as a musician and as a person. Writing about different subjects and composing instrumentals that describe my own style of the ukulele. Here's the breakdown and description of the tracks.
Track 1: "Space Suits"
The title track of this EP. I collaborated with my friend Aiko Yamashiro. She pointed out to me that one of the flaws of the last album was that it was all about one subject... love. Every song was written about a girl or just love in general. So I tried my hand at writing a song about a subject other than love. I was currently working at the Hyatt regency hotel and was very unhappy with my job. The job itself was fun and great, but the people that I worked with sucked the fun out of EVERYTHING. So I basically hated every time I woke up and had to drive to my crappy job, to my crappy coworkers, and work for 10 crappy hours. So I decided to write about that. How I hated going to work and I felt that I gave up on all the things I wanted to do with my life. Whatever happened to my dreams of being a pilot? My 10 year old self would've been disappointed if he saw me then. Whatever happened to the good old days of slow paced life and just watching the time pass by. I wrote out the first verse and chorus of the song and Aiko wrote a verse. I took the verse she wrote and split it into a verse and a bridge. I'm very satisfied with how it came out.
Track 2: "Oversoul"
This is one of my favorite tracks of the EP. I wanted to compose an instrumental that shows all the video game influences on my ukulele style. The main theme is based on Megaman 2 while some of the verses have influences from old NES games such as Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Ninja Gaiden. Once I laid out the chords and main theme; I just started layering parts and just played what sounded right to me. It's even set up like a video game level. It would start of with the main theme; basically the 1-1 1-2 kind of levels. Then after the halfway point is a dungeon. Listen to the part at 2:20 and tell me if you can't imagine yourself in a zelda dungeon or Bowsers castle haha.
Track 3: "Only mine"
I was basically bored one day and talking to my girlfriend Heather about trying to write. I was telling her that I haven't really written a happy song. So 15min after hanging up the phone, this song came out. Also, I've always been writing songs for me. I haven't tried to write a song for my ukulele. I've always been trying to write pop or emo sounding songs and I've always been trying to imagine the end result with guitar and bass etc. So I decided to write a song that featured the uke. I gave it that old style ukulele feel and wrote a happy song about Heather. It sounded a bit possessive but it came out fine hahah.
Track 4: "Melody of Red"
This track started off with fooling around with a G and Gaug switch. I also wanted to compose a ballad for the uke that had a walking C string bass line (the C string plays D, D#, E, F#, G) Also at this time, I was talking to my friend Marian about this song I was composing. She also inspired the title for the song. We were talking one night and she told me that she had a chinese name (she's pure chinese) Her chinese name was Dan Huwa. I asked her what it meant and she said "It means red" so I named the melody after her.
Track 5: "Ice cream"
This is actually the first radio track from this EP. First played on KQNG 93.5 here on Kauai. This song was written last October during my solo California tour. I met my friend Monique for the first time and she inspired this song. Before that time, I've always been the one playing the songs and singing and such, but when we met; I was in the audience chair and she entertained me. I was highly impressed so I wrote about that feeling of being serenaded to. We have this inside joke of being fake friends and her owing me ice cream. Therefore I named the song after the inside joke about ice cream.
